Federal Gas Tax Funding

Federal Gas Tax Funding

The federal Gas Tax Fund is a permanent source of funding for municipal infrastructure.  It is predictable, long-term and stable, and is helping Ontario municipal governments address a massive, province-wide infrastructure deficit while improving environmental sustainability and creating jobs and economic growth.  It was announced in the 2005 Federal Budget and was created to help municipalities undertake environmentally sustainable infrastructure projects over a five-year period (2005-2009).  At the time, the Federal Government had committed approximately $1.9 billion in infrastructure funding to municipalities in Ontario.  The Federal Government extended the funding for an additional four years (2010-2014) and has committed to making the Federal Gas Tax Fund permanent beyond 2014.

Municipalities in Ontario receive predictable entitlement based funding of approximately $744 million per year.  In total, Ontario's municipalities will receive $3.8 billion between 2014 and 2018.  This funding has not only helped the residents of Ontario enjoy cleaner air and cleaner water, but has also helped to stimulate local economies by aiding in job creation and the improvement of infrastructure that will support future economic growth.

Through the facilitation efforts of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, the Town of Lincoln has been fortunate to receive over $5 million in Federal Gas Tax funding since 2005.  This funding has helped the Town to provide cleaner air by reducing greenhouse gas emissions for residents by aiding in the upgrading of local transportation infrastructure.

The Municipal Funding Agreement for the Transfer of Federal Gas Tax Revenues requires municipalities to demonstrate measurable environmental outcomes.  Each project will have to demonstrate how it has benefitted the community, and how it has benefitted from this long-term, predictable source of funding.  Where possible, measures will reflect existing information already collected by municipalities or information that is readily available to municipalities.
