Restoration Program

In 2021 a monument restoration specialist was retained for assessments in each of the five active cemeteries as well as Haines Cemetery.  All those with deficiencies were recorded using a three-tiered priority level according to immediate safety concerns, moderate safety concerns and those monuments in need of non urgent conservation treatment to avoid the further loss of cultural heritage features.  A multi-year plan was developed, and extensive restoration has been completed on more than 240 monuments.

All treatments are based on the assessments and apply the methods for repairing monuments as outlined in the Ministry of Culture’s Landscapes of Memories – A Guide for Conserving Historic Cemeteries.
