Municipal Accommodation Tax

Welcome to the Town of Lincoln's information page regarding the Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT). Recently approved by Town of Lincoln Council through By-law No. 2023-68 on December 13, 2023.

The MAT program, authorized by the Stronger, Healthier Ontario Act 2017, empowers municipalities to levy a transient accommodations tax. The Town of Lincoln, aligning with its Tourism Strategy and Action Plan 2020-2025, sees the MAT as a pivotal means to fund its Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) while reducing the financial burden on residents.

What is a Municipal Accommodation Tax?

The Town of Lincoln has established a mandatory Municipal Accommodation Tax.  MAT is a mandatory tax aimed at providing essential funding to support one of Lincoln’s most significant economic sector, tourism, and spur further economic growth and job creation. It will help fund destination marketing and tourism development initiatives. The MAT program, authorized by the Stronger, Healthier Ontario Act 2017, empowers municipalities to levy a transient accommodations tax. The MAT applies to the sale of overnight accommodations only and is paid for by the visitor.

MAT Remittance Process

The Town of Lincoln has designated the Ontario Restaurant & Hotel Motel Association (ORHMA) as its collection agent for MAT from Accommodation Providers and remit it to the Town. ORHMA provides Accommodation Providers with an online “MAT Reporting Tool” that calculates MAT owing.
