West Niagara municipalities united in strong support of new hospital

Lincoln ON - (May 27, 2020) - The Councils of Lincoln, Grimsby and West Lincoln have voted unanimously to commit to the local share of funding for the new West Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

The Province of Ontario will fund most of the $200-million hospital, but local communities must fund about 30 per cent of the project. In order to move to stage three of the redevelopment, Infrastructure Ontario set a May 31 deadline for letters of commitment from the three municipalities to fund the local portion.

“This is an exciting step toward the realization of this goal, to ensure patients and families have access to the health care they need in West Niagara,” said Town of Lincoln Mayor, Sandra Easton. “There is still much work to be done, including fundraising in the community and continuing to build support. We will also continue to assist, and advocate for, Hamilton Health Sciences to help them move through future phases of development.”

Staff will now determine and finalize the financing model for the municipalities to fund, together with the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital Foundation, the estimated $60-million local investment.

“There is a sense that hospital support is motherhood and apple pie, but we did not lose sight of the fact that it will be a significant commitment for our residents,” said Township of West Lincoln Mayor David Bylsma. “I’m thankful to the many folks who have propelled this project forward lately, but especially in decades past.”

Town of Grimsby Mayor Jeff Jordan says, “This is a very significant investment in the community and will provide much-needed health care to our region. Local residents have been advocating for the new hospital for almost two decades and this is an exciting step in advancing the project.”

Hamilton Health Sciences says the redevelopment remains on schedule, with construction expected to begin in 2022. The vision for the new hospital was developed in consultation with staff, physicians, partners and the community and includes inpatient services, 24-hour emergency care, maternal/newborn care, a focus on healthy aging and seniors’ care, specialty clinics, X-ray, mammography, echocardiography, ultrasound and CT scanner and community surgery, featuring an innovative day surgery model with four surgical suites, including endoscopy and minor procedures.
